If the local hotel industry is able to claw its way out of the recession, its going to take more than free cable.
Danfords Hotel and Marina in Port Jefferson has lowered rates about 7 percent and guest may now make free local phone calls, access free wireless Internet throughout the hotel and eat free breakfast on weekdays.
Stewart Weiner, general manager of Danfords, said his 86-room hotel completed a multimillion-dollar renovation two years ago just as the "economy fell out from under us." He said that rather than cutting rates significantly, he decided to "add more value to the guest experience" by adding free amenities.
And Weiner said the restaurant menu was expanded "to add more choices at a reasonable price," including fixed price items.
In addition, he said the hotel is offering more package deals, including tickets to the local theater and a three-course dinner in the hotel's restaurant.
