Some 200 swimmers and 400 boaters are expected to converge on Danfords Inn and Marina in Port Jefferson Saturday for the 23rd annual SWIM Across the Sound (www.swimacrossthesoung.org) Marathon benefiting St. Vincent’s Medical Center Foundation of Bridgeport, Conn.
The marathon will kick off between 8:30 and 9:30am with a fleet of boats launching from Danfords Marina and swimmers taking off from West Beach in Port Jefferson.
The marathon involves amateur solo swimmers and relay teams, swimming the 15.5 miles to Bridgeport. Each swimmer or team will be provided with a motorized escort boat. Last year’s event raised $350,000 for 36 cancer services which provide financial support and care to patients and their families for the needs that health insurance companies do no cover in addition to support groups, education, prevention and wellness programs.
Danfords Hotel & Marina will provide marathon swimmers and volunteer boaters with a special pasta buffet dinner the night before from 6 to 8 pm in the Brookhaven Ballroom and a complimentary breakfast in the morning of the event. Boaters will also receive complimentary admission to AQUA, Danfords’ waterfront dance club and tapas lounge.
